Fleur-de-lis This is the initial information for Troop 500 scouts attending Camp Oljato.

What to Bring - We will travel to camp via chartered bus. We will travel in Class A uniforms. The plan is to leave early Sunday morning and arrive at camp that afternoon. The scouts will then board a boat for the final transit to camp. Each scout needs to be self contained. That is to say all gear should be in a backpack or large duffel bag that the scout can manage on his own. Loose gear may be lost in transit. Military duffel bags are available that have shoulder straps and work remarkably well for camp. They cost about $5.00 used. As to personal gear here is a list from previous camps. It is not exhaustive, but is a good guide.

Medical Form - Each scout going to camp will need to complete the NEW BSA medical form. This form is being phased in by BSA. If your old medical from previous years is still current (less than 36 months old) you can use that by attaching it to the NEW form. However, all scouts must complete the NEW form as it has releases on it that need to be completed. Turn the completed forms in to me or Lisa Shunkwiler by June 30th.

A quick word about medication. If your scout has any such needs, prescription or non-prescription, the form must be filled out and given to me. One of the Trek leaders will be in charge of ALL medicine for our troop. The scout will not have any such items in their possession without Trek Leader approval.

Merit Badge Signups - We need to complete the MB sign ups on line. Therefore I will need to know your MB choices ASAP. The MB program Schedule is here. All scouts should focus on Eagle required MB’s offered at camp. Theses are hard to earn outside of camp. There will be ample free time as the week progresses to pick up some of the more easily earned MB’s such as Basketry.

First year scouts and those that do not have these MB’s will be taking First Aide, Period #1, Swimming, Period #2 & Lifesaving, Period #3. These contain many rank advancement requirements. In addition, with the Treks offered by T500 these MB’s are more often than not, required.

Get your MB selections in to me by June 3rd.

Sending Mail to Camp - Letters and packages in camp are always welcome. Send them before your scout leaves and they will be there through the week.

  • US Mail - Camp Oljato Troop 500, Scout Name, P.O. Box 217, Lakeshore, CA 93634
  • Packages - Camp Oljato Troop 500, Scout Name, c/o Lakeshore Resort, 61953 Lakeshore Rd., Lakeshore, CA 93634

That’s it for now. Let’s all work together to make this a great adventure into the High Sierras for all of the scouts in T500. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me.

Yours in Scouting,
Chuck Mellor, T500 Scoutmaster
